securing XP laptop

I would like to secure a laptop. I would only like to give the laptop access
to the internet, so that it can be used to read mail on the internet. I don't
want the laptop to be able to access network drives on the LAN.

Fine. Don't enable file/printer sharing. You haven't given us any
information about what version of XP you are running, whether this is a
domain or workgroup/home or business environment.
