I want to secure certain files or folders with a password so others using my computer can not have access to it. Is there anyway in WinXp to do that? Please help.

Hi,

you can use NTFS permissions. First, you have to use NTFS files system (not
FAT). Open Windows Explorer and open Tools > Folder Options > View > and on
the bottom uncheck "Use simplified sharing".

Now select the folder that you would like to protect and right click on it
and select properties. Click Security tab (if you don't have security tab
then you most likely use FAT files system). On Security tab click Add and
enter your username, give yourself Full Control and click Apply. Now remove
any other user that you can see here (if you are depending on system backup
to backup your files, leave in System account). Once you remove all users
click Apply and OK. Now your folder is only accessible to you. Note that
users with administrative privileges can always take permissions back...

If you are using the NTFS file system you can use the
EFS feauture of Windows. Select
properties on the folder which you want to encrypt and
select advance from the general tab. Check the 'encrypt
contents to secure data.'
This way your files are encrypted and available only from
your login.
