I have a Windows XP notebook and am looking at securing the data, OS
and programs.

Could someone please give me some advice regarding this?

If it is stolen etc I don't want people to have access to the OS or do
a parallel installation.

The data needs to be encrypted somehow, I am not to keen on using EFS.

If a user gets access to the OS they will be able to get my program
registration numbers which is another concern.

I used PGP to secure the data but now a days it's a yearly
subscription and quite expensive.

If there are any good websites, docs, procedures and advice I would
appreciate peoples opinions.

Why don't you want to use EFS?? It has been improved over W2K in some
vulnerabilities, particularly the reset the use password vulnerability. With EFS [or
any encryption] to maintain maximum security you should export/delete your private
EFS key when the security of the laptop can not be guaranteed. However if you use a
complex password for your accounts AND use a syskey password/floppy to protect access
to the operating system it would be extremely difficult to access your EFS files even
if the EFS private key was still on your computer. --- Steve

Hi

We use Utimaco's SafeGuard Easy for laptop protection, and are very
satisfied with the product.
