Securing a Microsoft Word 2003 Document

Yes, but not very securely. Remember that ANYTHING that can be displayed on
screen can be stolen, but you can make it a little difficult.

If you use File, SaveAs, select the Options button, you can then password
protect the document as Read Only.

With the document open, you can also select the whole document and apply
Tools, Protect and give it a different password making it non editable too.

These will make it difficult for the casual Word users to edit as the
password protection is quite strong in Word 2003 (as long as you use a
random LONG password).

A better and slightly more secure solution is to create a PDF from the
document and protect it. However, the same goes for PDFs too in that an
expert can still steal it.

I am not sure if this is the correct group to post my question to.

I wrote a microsoft word document that needs to be distributed in a word
format. However, I want to protect my document so that no one can change
but myself.

Can this be done in MicroSoft Word? If so, How can I do this?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If it can be read, it can be copied. All one needs is the ability to
type or write.

Hi Saw,

Hopefully, you do not have any form field inserted in your word document
such as a textbox. If there is not form field, you can try following
suggestions:

- open your word document which you want to protect
- go to tools>protect document (this will open side pane for "Protect
Document")
- click to check "Allow only this type of editing in the document"
- select "Filling in forms"
- click on "Yes, Start enforcing protection"
- you will get a window asking to type password
- type, retype password and save document

If you have form fields in your document, even then you can make it password
protected but it would be a bit complex procedure. So, for the time, try this
and please reply back

Not quite. You can set read-only recommended, but that itself doesn't
ensure the file is read-only. You can also set a modify password, but
that doesn't prevent the file being saved under a different filename
WITHOUT a file modify password. Once saved and Word exited, only OS
file system privileges could prevent the user from overwriting the
original with the unprotected copy.
With the document open, you can also select the whole document and
apply Tools, Protect and give it a different password making it non
editable too.

Not that difficult to circumvent.

It would take all of 30 seconds for anyone familiar with Word to get around
that. The bottom line here is that if you can see the document it is yours
to do with as you wish.

Did I say it was very secure? No.

I already know the drawbacks of trying to secure a document. I think I gave
plenty of warnings in my answer in saying that ANYTHING that can be
displayed on screen isn't safe. There are just different levels of
difficulties. Anyone determined to steal a documents content will not be
prevented by any measures.

Whatever you do to protect the document, there is one or the other software
to break it just as OneNote screen clipping

In this case, better option would be to create a sound file, so that the
user cannot edit it..! :-)

But again, he can listen to it and write it down..! :-D
