Securing a database

Access 2000 security is driving me barmy. Why is it so complicated? Nothing
I have read seems to simplify things.

A couple of questions anyway:

First, this workgroup information file. I am totally unclear about how I am
supposed to create it. Is it through the workgroup administrator program OR
through the security wizard? I have tried both but the wizard only ever
starts with the option of creating a new workgroup info file so I can't see
why I should bother with creating one through the administrator program?!?

Second, what is the purpose of the copy of the database which is created?

Third, what version am I supposed to protect? The copy or the original?

Sorry to appear so stupid but I personally think the whole thing is as clear
as mud.

If you haven't got it, download and study the security FAQ from

There is also a whitepaper

Just use the wizard.

A backup, so that when you make mistakes or get confused (like now), you
have something to go back to so that you can start over, fresh.

The copy. I suggest you start over. Step 1 is backup your database. Step 2
is read. Step 3 is read some more. It really does take quite a bit of
studying before you really understand. Once you think you do, practice on a
copy of your database. Once you've played and tested, do it for real on a
copy of your database.
