Read the help included with the email program. Search for articles
mentioning digital signing and encryption. You get an x.509 email
certificate which has a public and private key. When you sign an
email, you give the recipient your public key. They can then use your
public key to encrypt emails that they send to you. No one can
decrypt that email even if they also have the public key. Only the
private key that only you have can decrypt that email that was encrypt
using your public key. So it is the person that wants to *receive*
encrypted emails that gives out their public key.

Thawte has freemail certs. You can use those but they only identify
you by your e-mail address, not by your name or anything that someone
else can use to identify who you are (unless you go through Thawte's
Web-of-Trust mechanism to add more data to your cert).
