Secondary IP adr shows up first in DNS

I recently added the smtp service on my win2k Domain Controller which also
runs DNS server. Thinking that it would be better to have a "virtual"
interface for smtp, I added a secondary ip address to my ethernet interface.
Since doing this, I am bothered by the fact that workstations on the domain
now show the secondary ip address as being listed first when I run nslookup.
Is there a way to correct it so that my primary ip address gets listed
first? And is it a problem?

Thanks, Joel

That's indicative of Round Robin. Both addresses will register.
You could disable Round Robin and use Subnet Ordering.

Is this causing any problems with domain functionality? If not, I wouldn't
be bothered over it. If it's causing problems, then I would fret. Nslookup
is just returning the name and IP for you. If the clients can resolve the
domain rsources, and there are no errors, then I would just leave it go.

Any reason that you need the extra IP? Why not just use the default IP of
the NIC? Reasons?

Ace, apparently my reply never made it on so let me try again!

Thank you for your comments. At this point, I will prefer not to worry
about it! My reasoning for using the extra ip was a throwback to nt 4.0
when using smtp--wasn't it recommended to create a secondary ip when
utilizing smtp?

Not necessarily, unless you're creating a connection to a partner with an
addition virtual SMTP server that you would want some sort of security on
it, such as TLS or a non publicly published IP. Otherwise, just stick with
the default or leave it as "all unassigned".
