Second request: Is there a way to disable applets?

On many sites I visit, the page automatically starts to scroll up or down,
using some specific applet. Is there a way I can disable these without
affecting the normal performance of the browser?

Applets usually imply Java support; so disable Java support
if you don't want to see them. It's unlikely that you will get anything
to substitute with the same information but you might, depending
on how the page is created.

If your Java support is from MS you could disable it using the Security tab.
Doubleclicking on the zone icon (e.g. the Globe icon in the Status bar)
is the fastest way to open that. Then click on Custom Level...
and press J, D, space.

If your Java support is from Sun you're on your own.
I don't know anything about that.
