Second installation - activation

Regarding the Windows XP 'activation' procedure, how does that affect
setting up a multi-boot system? Say I want to have a second Windows XP
installation on the same computer, the second one being for installing beta
software or other 'junk' to not mess up the main installation. In Windows
2000 this is easy to do. What does activation do to this in Windows XP? Does
the activation basically pick up the second install as the same computer
since all the components are identical except for the hard drive partition
it is installed to?

It should not cause any problems. When windows activates
it picks about 10 pieces of hardware of your system to
create a reference point. It locks this into the
activation. As long as you don't change out too many
pieces of hardware, you won't have any problems with
activation. If you're not changing any hardware, (just
multi booting) you won't have any problems. During your
multi-boot install, make sure you install the "oldest"
version of operation system first before installing xp.
Also make sure that you install XP on a complete seperate
partition. Good luck.

Did you understand that it is two installations on the same computer just on
different partitions? I suspect it is ok I'm just wondering about the
activation issue and how it counts the installs.

The Windows XP End-User License Agreement states you may
install only one (1) copy of Windows XP on one (1) computer.
If you wish to install a second copy Windows XP, you'll need to
purchase another license.

Read your Windows XP End-User License Agreement:

Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

It clearly states that you may only install one (1) copy
of Windows XP on just one (1) computer. You will
need a new license (Product Key) for each new
installation on a different computer.

Also, open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and click on "Questions and Answers about the
End User License Agreement".

With this big hard drive I've got all sorts of various installations. I'm
still wondering how XP activation works with this scenario. Perhaps I should
just try it but I was hoping someone who has experience with this would
indicate what the deal is.

Answer is still the same: (1) copy of Windows XP allows (1) installation
on (1) hard drive installed in (1) computer. A second installation requires
a new license (Product Key). Its all outlined in the EULA.

I'm using a trial version but even there I see what you may be referring to:

from eula.txt

a. Installation. You may install the Product on your
computers, solely for purposes of demonstration, testing,
examination and evaluation of the Product. You may not
separate component parts of the Product for use on more
than one computer. You may not install the Product (or any
component thereof) more than one time on the same computer.

That is harsh. Seems like there should be an allowance for more than one
install on the same computer. Even if someone wanted more than one user to
share the same computer they could accomplish that with user profiles. The
main reason I have to install a second installation is for beta software and
other testing. Looks like I'll keep using 2000. The eula for 2000 does not
appear to have this specific limitation.

WPa reads the hardware in the system. Since you are install twice on
the same system, the hardware is, of course, the same, So, WPa won't be a
problem.

The EULA, on the other hand, is a differnet story.
