I was given a pc with win xp pro installed but no xp cd. I have bought an
oem copy of xp pro with a new hard drive which is going in my kids computer
(drive not xp). Can I do a repair install over the existing version with the
new one or will I need to do a clean install? Hope someone can advise me on
this as it would save many hours of work. Thanks in anticipation.

try installing the xp cd you bough, when prompted for the
license number, insert yours and see if xp will accept it.

other than a registry edit, looks like you may need to do
a fresh install though.

OEM has to be installed on a clean disk, so back up all your data and start
over.

My other pc has oem version too and a repair install worked on that one,
only difference being this one will be installing over a different copy. I
was hoping it would accept the new key to overwrite the old one which I
don't have.
