Hello

We just opened second office and I need to set up a DNS server for that
office. The DNS server should interoperate with our existing DNS server.

Any guidelines or links to manuals or whitepapers are appreciated.

Thanks

2nd DNS Issues

1. When setup 2nd DNS, make sure you type correct Master DNS Server IP address.
2. Make sure primary DNS and 2nd DNS servers can ping each other and not firewall block them.
3. Make sure primary DNS and 2nd DNS servers point to each other as primary and themselves as secondary.

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.

This isn't an easy question to answer based only on this information. If
the two offices are distant from each other and linked via some sort of WAN
link you need to consider many other issues - like how you will handle
address ranges between the sites, routing between the two sites, whether or
not WINS will be necessary along with DNS (it probably will be) and so on
....

OK it was a vague question.

The situation is that I have two offices. Both havin own DC:s (in own sites)
but only the PDC in the first office offers DNS service so I need to set up
a local DNS service for the remote office aswell.

So the offices are in their own sites and subnets and I would like to set up
the DNS service of the branch office to replicate with the existing offices
DNS server (there is a dedicated permanent connection between offices). I
think that the best way would set up the PDC's DNS as primary and the other
as secondary. And to make both servers serve all computers in the domain (as
primary and secondary) for fault tolerancy issues.

So how do I set this up? (Avoiding the "island" problem)

Thanks
-Will

First, you're going to need WINS running at both sites.

Next, do you have an Active Directory domain? If so you need to then set up
your second DNS server with an AD-integrated forward lookup zone the same as
the existing DNS server.

Finally, what I'd do would be to have the first site use its DNS server as
primary and the remote site's DNS as secondary; reverse the process at the
remote site with the remote DNS primary and the first site as secondary. If
you're running Microsoft DHCP you can make these changes in the scope
options.
