Setting up second W2000 server in previously single-server
mixed mode domain. The domain name is not recognized in
the a-d setup wizard -- gives message "Active directory
installation failed - failed finding a suitable domain
controller for the domain xxxx.
Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Check the DNS settings on the second w2k server.

It should only have 1 entry, the first DC (assuming your DC is
running DNS).

If you're running DNS on your second w2k, it's good practice to point
DNS to itself only.

Thanks, that did the trick. Guess I'm OK for sky diving!

Cool.
Are you running with AD inegrated DNS?
Now that the second DC is up and running, here's another question.
Is it running DNS?

Only if it is, point the DNS setting to itself only.

Summary:
DC1 <- DNS is DC1 only
DC2 <- DNS is DC2 only
Clients <- DNS is DC1, DC2

If I have a server running DNS, I only want it to have 1 DNS entry so
it's easier to spot and troubleshoot when the DNS doesn't work on the
server.

It's a personal preference.
