I'm running XP Pro, 1280x1024 resolution, the left hand column of my xp style start menu is full, expanded right to the top of the screen, but there is lots of space on the right column- is there any way to add items to the right column?

do believe there is a way to add items to the SYSTEM part of the menu. however you can remove items from the left menu by right click and select remove.

also using TWEAKUI for xp you can limit the items that will remain in the left had section.

Yes, but all the icons in the left hand column are the ones I regularly use, some are pinned to the top, others dynamic, but there is space on the left to fit another 10 regularly used programs. I have found a registry key on another newsgroup to allow me to add one, but cannot add more than that. I could probably do without it, but it just irritates me that my precious screen space isn't being utilized to the maximum.

Try "small icons" in the start menu. You can increase the number of
programs that show under the first divider line (between pinned and most
often used) if you use this setting. These changes won't allow more items
on the right but it may even out the real estate distribution.

Also, try moving some of those left hand column pinned shortcuts into Quick
Launch. Or create a customized toolbar for them.

I like the xp look- if I went for small icons its hard too see at 1280x1024 res on a 15" screen, and doesn't look as flashy, quick launch uses up too much of the taskbar to make it viable for me, basically I just want to add icons to that side.

another thing you can do is to add them to the desktop and then add the DESKTOP tool bar to the taskbar. that makes them just a click away just as if they were on the start menu.
