IM is not my cup of tea. I fail to see the value in chit chatting back and
forth with others who (hopefully!) will be on line to reply. With the advent
of free long distance, or at least cheap, why not use that?

But that's just me. ;)

You definately are not a student

Not my cup of tea but there is an amazing user-base out there. Not just
students. Many companies use IM internally as a quick contact mechanism
rather than email.
