I have looked and looked but can't find. As with MSAS my security center does
not recognize defender. "monitor my own" is my only option to get rid of the
red shield. Is this a known issue or is there a way to get security center to
recognize Defender?

Thanks

I don't understand your question, I guess. The Security Center is for
Microsoft Windows Automatic Updates, Firewall Protection and Anti-Virus
Protection - nothing to do with Spyware Programs such as Defender. If you
have a red shield, you need to make sure you have a proper firewall,
Anti-Virus Program and select the way you wish to receive Windows Updates.
Don't think Defender is defending any of those areas - it is for spyware only.

Security Center in XP will not recognise Windows Defender so you won`t see it
there. Its a bolt on product for XP users. That is a privilege in store for
Vista users when it goes RTM later this year. The red shield in your system
tray means your Windows Firewall is turned off and you have no other third
party Firewall software installed on your system. If this is the case, to
reactivate it: Control Panel>Security>Windows Firewall>General Tab>On
(recommended). However, it is not a good Firewall - will try to prevent
things getting in but not out ! No third layer protection!

Thanks, I thought MSAS and Defender were also a "virus" program as well. I
could have sworn they said "updating virus descriptions". I guess we see what
we want to see. Thanks, I'll look into other applications.

Not correct. Windows Defender and Microsoft Antispyware are
antispyware--different category. You need current antivirus protection as
well--and it is a significantly higher priority than antispyware.

Thanks, I'm giving OneCare a try.

It's got plusses and minuses. In general, I like the antivirus component
reasonably well.
