Searching with Keywords

I have Windows XP Home 1.0 that came with my Gateway computer I got in 2002.
For each of my image files I have filled out file information by right
clicking on the image, going to "Properties" and then clicking on the Summary
tab in the Properties Dialog Box. I fill out keywords in the keyword field
seperating them with commas , then a space.
As an example, if I wanted to find all my photos of children I would do a
search in XP using Search Companion. I would click on "Pictures, Music, Or
Video," then activate the "Pictures And Photos" check box, then click on "Use
Advanced Search Options." Then type "Children", in the "A Word or Phrase in
the File" field, then put "My Pictures" in the "Look In" field. [I think
the "search subfolders" box should be checked in "More Advanced Options."]
Then I hit Search.
Windows XP would then bring up every photo in "My Pictures" with the keyword
"Children," in the file information.
I do not know that much about the structure of computers or am I good at
getting across questions. I don´t want to buy a photo cataloging program yet
and I hope I'm asking this right. My question is this:
Is there any way I can tweak XP or use some form of "computer speak" to have
XP recognize two different keywords (not listed right together in the keyword
field and hence not recognized together as a phrase) and bring all photos up
that have those two keywords listed independently in their keyword box of
their Properties Dialog Box? I have many photos. Some would have a
"Children," keyword among other keywords listed. Some would have a
"Mothers," keyword among other keywords listed. I want XP to find only the
photos having a "Children," keyword somewhere in the list together with a
"Mothers," keyword somewhere in the same list. I don't want XP to bring up
all of the pictures I have with a "Children," keyword plus all of the
pictures I have with a "Mothers," keyword. Just the ones who have BOTH the
keywords somewhere in the keyword field. I don't know how to put this
across. One site refered to this as Logical Operators. Logical Operators
are linking words like AND, OR and NOT, which combine the criteria and allow
you to narrow or broaden your search. XP does not have to use Logical
Operators but a way to accomplish this same thing would help me. Is there
some way XP Home could do this? Could XP Professional do it? Is there a way
to amend XP Home or XP Professional so they could do this? If no to all
where do I go next? Do I have to buy a photo cataloging program? I am not
on the internet. Thank you Very Much for your help.

Your having the same issue I'm Having, very upsetting that this issue hasnt
been resolved. and I would suspect that this is a "buy this other program"
kinda thing to help resolve this issue. Its bull!!!! some af the problems I
have with these programs is that;

what happens when I want to upgrade to a better program " I've lost all that
time in keywords"
when I goto a family members home with a disk of pictures and I can't search
them like I do at home so everything takes 2 times as long. dont want to take
my laptop everwhere I go.
Ive got 2 computers laptop and a desktop so I'd have to buy 2 programs!!

The reasons go on and on. and I've been looking into this for hours and no
one seems to know why the heck they did the lame search engine for the 2+
keyword searches. maybe the answer is APPLE..... they seem to be keen to the
needs of the custumer. I HOPE BILL READS THIS AND MAKES A FEW CHANGES

What all the producers of these products dont seem to understand is that if
we cant find and easily manage all this information it will fall out of favor
and be replaced!!!

sorry for the venting and type-o-s

Hello Sue,

Unfortunately, I can't think of any way in Windows to do the advanced type
of searches that you want. Even the Search feature in XP can't do it. You
would probably need to purchase a program that does cataloging but even most
of those won't have the advanced searching functionality that you want.

Perhaps someone else can offer you some suggestions on other possible ways
to accomplish what you want with Windows, or other software packages that
you could use.

Thank you,
Gregg Rivers [MSFT]

Hi Sue,

Have you tried using the MSN toolbar (http://toolbar.msn.com/) to
perform searches on your photos? The Windows Desktop Search feature
performs way faster than the Windows Search Companion in XP, and is
capable of searching within captions and keywords.
