Searching Registry causes a Reboot!

My wife's PC (running Windows XP Home Edition 2002, SP2) was used heavily by
our grown children and their spouses over the holidays, with a number of
social networking downloads installed. Now sometimes when we direct it to
shut down, it restarts instead.
I have also found that trying to search the registry (using regedit's Find
command) causes the whole system to reboot!
Should I try reverting to a previous system save point, do you think? As
opposed to trying to clean up the registry or even reinstall windows. I have
disabled Automatic Restart on System Failure (MyComputer, Properties,
Advanced tab).

I should add that I've run chkdsk on the hard drive (in basic, non-repair
mode) and it reported no problems.

Try a system restore to a date before the registry was damaged.

Thank you for the replies!

I reverted to an automatic system savepoint from the beginning of November
and things seem to be working well. Can now search the registry without
getting the bluescreen reboot.

I see the dump files. I won't bother you with them unless you're really
interested, as things seem fine now.

ok,

then what you should do
now is to make a system
restore point for today.

also, you may not know
this, but if you use your
windows cd to do a
repair installation, the
cd will replace or restore
corrupted system files
with genuine ones.

because one might consider
the repair as resetting the o.s.
it will delete all previous
restore points and create
a brand new.

also, keep in mind that
a repair preserves your
registry and many of
your programs.

however, if you have a
program that fails to work
after the repair, then it is
likely the cause of the
corruption and you should
not reinstall it again.
