I have a new laptop and using XP for the first time. As a
minister I have many old text files from different
programs to seach from time to time. In 98 I could go to
Explorer/tools/find and type the text and will would give
me all the files I was looking for regardless of the
program. In XP it seems to search only word files. It is
not finding text for me in Powerpoint/Lotus or other
programs.
Any answers?

Do the following:
Go to Start | Search | For Files or Folders.
From there, select the option called, "All files and folders".
Under the field called "All or part of the file name:", enter in the name of
the file of interest, followed by a period (.), then an asterisk (*).
Example: foo.*

This will find all files beginning with that file name, no matter what file
type it is.

The complaint is not with finding filenames; the complaint is with finding specific text within files.

XP will only search document types that it has filters for. You can wrestle
with this (see http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_bad_search.htm for more
information) or try Agent Ransack, a free search program:
