Is there a way to search for a keyword that is entered via
the file properties > summary > keyword fields ( or for a
comment in the comment field ) ?

thanks

David, if by XP's search field you mean 'a word or phrase
in the file' box, that is for searching the body of the
file only, not the file properties.
What I'm looking for is an option to search for a word or
phrase within the file's properties, be it keywords,
author, subject, comments...

Thanks anyway

Just put the word in XP's search in the Containing Text field.

David, I'm posting this message after reading your nasty
response in the other newsgroup - For the benefit of other
readers reading this thread, putting a 'keyword' entry, or
any other entry from file properties summaries, into
the 'containing text' box , does not work - at least not
for me. I tried that, and many other things, BEFORE I
posted the message.

Try one more time....

Open a folder that contains image files...
"My Pictures"...for example...

Left click the "Search" button on the toolbar.

In the "Search Companion" pane...choose...
All files and folders.

Enter your keyword in the "A word or phrase
in the file" field...

Click "Search".

BTW...it also works if you go to...Start / Search...

David, I guess miracles do happen - after spending 2 hours
reading about 'index server', I logged back on here, saw
your message, and gave it one last try - and lo and
behold, this time it worked ! I don't know what changed
from my previous attempts, and I did not make any changes
related to 'index server'.

One problem though, as I've posted in the 'general'
newsgroup, and no solution yet - there is no
option/checkbox to display the 'keywords' field data in
details view, 37 other choices, but no keywords. Stuff I
had put in the 'comments' field is what I searched on, and
it worked.

Any thoughts/suggestions on why 'keywords' is not able to
be viewed in 'details view', at least for .jpg and tif
files, which is where all my searchs will be. Keywords
would be my most important search term, but I guess I can
just put them in the comments field if I have to.

thanks again for your help

p.s. index server seems very interesting, but I don't know
if any of this discussion has to do with that or not

Hi John, and thanks for your previous help.

My question to Microsoft would be - of all the file
properties to list in 'choose details' (37 of them in most
folders), why did they leave out 'keywords' ??

You would think 'keywords' would be a 'key' property to
want to list, otherwise, why bother to have that field in
the 'file > properties > summary' dialog box ??

thanks again

May I suggest a 3rd party solution: PixView http://www.pixvue.com/
It integrates with the Windows Explorer and allows you to make galleries
(which work through links only so no data is duplicated). Also allows all
sort of advanced searches.

every time i open mt pictures the search comes up all the time what can i do
to stop search or change it thank you

Issue: Search Companion Starts If You Double-Click a Folder

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via
File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory"
feature for folders. (example)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321379
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321186

Resolution:

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
(Tip from David Candy)

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

-or-

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")
