The smart thing to do would be to not search at all. Just make sure Photo
Gallery points to all folders that contain pictures. Then open Photo Gallery
whenever you want to see all your pictures.

Of, if you don't like that click the Start button, choose Search, click
Picture, type * in the Search box and press Enter. (Make sure your search
index includes all folders that contain pictures).

Or, if you want to stick with the old-fashioned drive-thrashing
takes-forever style of searching, click the Start button, choose Search,
click Picture, click Advanced Search, choose Everywhere from the Location
drop-down, type * in the Name box and click Search. Then wait.

There are other ways to do it as well. But any of those will work.

He wants to find all pictures, as in *

Here's a more detailed answer.

Suppose you're hunting for pictures of Bob but only have a vague idea
where you put them.

1. Click on Start, then Search, then Advanced Search.
2. Click on Picture on the Tool Bar.
3. Define your Search by clicking on location, then the little arrow.
4. Say you know all your pictures of Bob are on your F drive, but you
don't know in which folder.
5. Type Bob in name, then click the search button.

Depending on the speed of your system, how many files you have,
shortly you'll get a thumbnail of every picture with Bob in its name.

If you know where to look you can restrict your search.

1. Use Windows Explorer to got to a specific folder. Assume you have a
folder set up called vacation, but it has thousands of files.

2. You know the name has Bob in it. From the folder use the Search
option to limit the search to just Bob, only files with Bob in
its name in THIS folder will get returned.

In search, how do you look for all pictures? the way you used to be able to
do in xp. So that you can see all thumbnails?

Its better in Vista. Open Search and look at the tool bar at the top
of the window. Select picture THEN enter a search phrase. Not perfect,
pretty good feature.

You could type

kind:pictures

[or choose Pictures off the toolbar in the search folder)

Then click View and choose Medium Icons, Large Icons, Extra Large Icons, or
Tiles.

Maybe click Organise then Layout and select Preview and Details.
