Howdy,

I wanted to locate any files on my system starting with the
letter "M" and with the extension "EXE."

I searched for: "M*.exe" (all these without the quotes.)

To my surprise, Windows 2000 then listed any files with the
letter "M" prior to the extension, and an extension of
"EXE."

So I expected it to list files such as:

Moose.EXE
Money.EXE
Maple.EXE

but it lists

Moose.EXE
Emory.EXE
Money.EXE
Palm.EXE
Maple.EXE

etc.

Why does a search for M*.EXE produce files that do NOT start
with "M"?

Sincere thanks,

Hello again,

I just went to another of my Win 2000 Pro systems and found
that the search function works just as I would have
expected.

I suspect that there is something in the registry of the
first machine that is causing the problem.

Might you assist?

Sincere thanks,
