Searching for email addresses

I'm trying to set up a secondary email address for a user, the Director of
IT. When I type in (e-mail address removed) it says that the email address is
already in use. I have two accounts, a user IT_Temp and a Group IT_Support,
but nothing solely IT.

Save going through each individual user and checking manually, is there a
way to search AD for the user that has this as an email address? It won't
be in the Properties field as it is most likely not the primary account
email. (Plus I already searched that!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Send the person an email and have them reply to you? Maybe the easiest.

I tried that, but it comes back undeliverable. Which is more of a problem
since AD says its a real email address.

Thanks.

In windows 2000 go to Start and Search. Choose For People. For Look in
You should have a choose for Active Directory. Then type in the emaill
address you want to search for and if it really exists somewhere in the
database this should find it.

Paul, thanks, I didn't think of trying that, but unfortunately, it came up
with nothing. If I can't find this address, then I should be able to add it
to the user. However, I can't add it and I can't find it.

For those keeping score at home...the exact error I get is:

This e-mail address already exists in this organization.
ID no: c10312e7
Microsoft Active Directory - Exchange Extension

We have one domain/forest, one location, one site.

I'm not giving up yet, hopefully someone will have some help for me!!

Also, that only seems to search the email field in the properties page...not
the actual email addresses in the E-Mail Addresses page. I tested it by
searching for an email address I knew did exist as an alias.

From Administriticve Tools open ADUC and try a FIND, it`s more powerful and
can find `orphaned` mailboxes

I had a problem that prevented removal of a Information Store due to this
type of mailbox and that was the solution that worked for me....you can even
delete it from this view !!

Rob,

The "Find" in ADUC only finds on the property page...when you actually type
in an email address on the General tab...I can't find it that way.

I thought perhaps it was a Public Folder...and I'm wondering if it might be.
I have a Public Contact folder called IT, but its "email address" is
(e-mail address removed) The object property is IT though. Could this be why
I can't add (e-mail address removed) as an alias for a user?

This is driving me crazy, so I'm hoping someone can help!

Go into the ADVANCED Tab and select the field drop down list, from there you
can specify which field to search on including User / Email address

Also check Email Address Other in case it`s a secondary address
And also Contacts drop down has an Email Address Field

Sorry i should have been more specific...i do this quite often

Rob

No, that's what I meant...it won't find them there.

It turns out it was a sub folder of a public folder, and I found it by going
to System manager on Exchange and searching there.

Thanks!
