search without index server

Hey guys,
I'm building a .net site for document storage and I want to put in a search
feature. For security reasons I don't want to make the file folder a virtual
folder. How should I go about this? Is index server even an option?
 
I believe Index Server is an option only if you are storing your documents in
the database. You might consider looking at WSS or (Windows Sharepoint
Services) as an option or SPS (Sharepoint Portal Server) as well.
