llo,
I use Yahoo as my home page.
I find that if I search in the search window and then press enter, it works
fine and gives me the results BUT the search window is overlaid with the
words which should remain above the window - such as business , search etc.
This means that you can't go back to the window and alter it without clicking
on something you don't want.
I have formatted my drive and reinstalled an yet it still does it!
Hoping someone can help as it is very frustrating.

Hi Silj,
I have run both Adaware and Search and Destroy and they brought up nothing.
I'm, just wondering if there can be a virus or such as I formatted the drive
before reinstalling everything even though the problem is still there.
I have read the tutorial for hijack this and it does sound a bit scary. I
don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling everything
again...
Do you think I should just go for it? and how can it be that there might
still be a vrus or spyware after a reinstall?
Cheers,
John

If there is scumware on your system, just doing a repair/reinstall will not
remove it. You will need to completely reformat your hard drive to
completely remove all scumware, then reinstall your OS from scratch.

Hope this helps.

The thing is, that I did do a reformat and complete reinstal afterwards of
the C drive and yet I still have the problem. I can only think that the bug
is lurking in the hidden "recovery" partition. I have reformatted
my other internal drive too and scanned my extrernal drives.

What process did you use to reformat your C:\ drive?
What program did you use to scan your drives with?
Have you run the HJT and posted your log to the AumHa fourm yet as Siljaline
suggested?
Are you getting any error messages when this problem happens? If so, what
is the exact wording? Or, what is happening, nothing, IE crashes, IE hangs
up/freezes?

Just for diagnostic purposes.....try this:
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the "Enable 3rd party browser extensions" if checked

See what happens.

Hi Silj,

I have now posted the log file to:
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?p=107337#107337. I hope I have
done it right.

Interestingly the problem does not seem to arise using Firefox although it
does when using Opera as well as Internet Explorer.

It relates to the Yahoo page which I use as my home page.

I tried to attach a screen shot to illustrate the problem but don't seem
able to do this. What happens is tha the search window becomes obscured by
the words which are above it such as news and shopping after a search has
been made.

Your help is much appreciated,
Thanks,
John

Hi Jan,

I have now posted the log as shown in my reply to Siljaline. Sorry, the URL
seems to have gone from the clipboard and I am unable to post the link again.

I reformatted using the Windows XP Home SP2 CD.

My anti virus program is NOD32. They tell me that the hidden paratition
could not be infected. It is not possible to scan it.

I tried unchecking the "Enable 3rd party browser extensions" but it didn't
seem to make any difference.

The problem is with the search window. No errror reports apear but the
window does not work properly in either IE nor Opera although it does in
Firefox. The words which are normally above the window such as Newsds and
shopping obscure the window after a search has been made.

Thanks for your help.
John

Hi jrsjs :-)

Thank you for the update information. When did this problem acutally start?
Did you do any updates, install any new programs that may have changed
something in the Registry settings?

So... you can actually access a webpage using the search, it is just that
the search bar is then distorted on the webpage?

Try the following:

First:
Control Panel> Accessibility Options> Display. Make sure that High Contrast
is not checked.

Go to View>Encoding>make sure that Auto-select at the top is not checked

If still no joy.....

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Accessibility button
Make sure nothing there is checked

If no joy...

The problem started a few weeks ago and I have been putting up with it
because I could not put it back to normal. I notice in the literature that
Silj sent me that weatherbug is named as a potential problem program, I used
tohave weatherbug and liked it. After my reinstall I tried to reinstall it
but NOD32 would not let me as it gave a virus alert. There was no such
problem in installing it when I had it before.
I have just run a search for weatherbug and although it was not installed I
found an empty program folder for it and three cookies which had all somehow
arrived on the computer. I have deleted them all.
I wonder if installing weatherbug was the beginning of my woes.

I have check dthe various suggestions you made, thank you but none seemed to
apply.

I have downloaded the Kelly's corner program but not run it yet as I do
have a couple of accessibility changes made to the computer which I don't
want to change - just that the control key is ringed if I press it and the
caps lock key bleeps if I press it. This has never caused a problem before.

Hi jrsjs :-)

Yes...the weatherbug is known to cause problems, and it is best to follow
through with the suggestions Siljaline has provided to be sure that there
are no more lurkers that may be hidden on your system.

I am afraid I am out of any further ideas at this point, and you are in good

my other internal drive too and scanned my extrernal drives.

What process did you use to reformat your C:\ drive?
What program did you use to scan your drives with?
Have you run the HJT and posted your log to the AumHa fourm yet as
Siljaline
suggested?
Are you getting any error messages when this problem happens? If so,
what
is the exact wording? Or, what is happening, nothing, IE crashes, IE
hangs
up/freezes?

Just for diagnostic purposes.....try this:
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the "Enable 3rd party browser extensions" if checked

See what happens.

Hi jrsjs :-)

Hi Silj,
I have run both Adaware and Search and Destroy and they brought
up
nothing.
I'm, just wondering if there can be a virus or such as I
formatted
the
drive
before reinstalling everything even though the problem is still
there.
I have read the tutorial for hijack this and it does sound a bit
scary.
I
don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling
everything
again...
Do you think I should just go for it? and how can it be that
there
might
still be a vrus or spyware after a reinstall?

If there is scumware on your system, just doing a repair/reinstall
will
not
remove it. You will need to completely reformat your hard drive to
completely remove all scumware, then reinstall your OS from
scratch.

Hope this helps.

Hi jrsjs :-)

Yes...the weatherbug is known to cause problems, and it is best to follow
through with the suggestions Siljaline has provided to be sure that there
are no more lurkers that may be hidden on your system.

I am afraid I am out of any further ideas at this point, and you are in good
hands at AumHa. I'm sure they will get you back up to speed soon.

The problem started a few weeks ago and I have been putting up with it
because I could not put it back to normal. I notice in the literature that
Silj sent me that weatherbug is named as a potential problem program, I
used
tohave weatherbug and liked it. After my reinstall I tried to reinstall
it
but NOD32 would not let me as it gave a virus alert. There was no such
problem in installing it when I had it before.
I have just run a search for weatherbug and although it was not installed
I
found an empty program folder for it and three cookies which had all
somehow
arrived on the computer. I have deleted them all.
I wonder if installing weatherbug was the beginning of my woes.

I have check dthe various suggestions you made, thank you but none seemed
to
apply.

I have downloaded the Kelly's corner program but not run it yet as I do
have a couple of accessibility changes made to the computer which I don't
want to change - just that the control key is ringed if I press it and the
caps lock key bleeps if I press it. This has never caused a problem
before.

Hi jrsjs :-)

Thank you for the update information. When did this problem acutally
start?
Did you do any updates, install any new programs that may have changed
something in the Registry settings?

So... you can actually access a webpage using the search, it is just that
the search bar is then distorted on the webpage?

Try the following:

First:
Control Panel> Accessibility Options> Display. Make sure that High
Contrast
is not checked.

Go to View>Encoding>make sure that Auto-select at the top is not checked

If still no joy.....

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Accessibility button
Make sure nothing there is checked

If no joy...

Unable to Enable or Disable Style Sheets in Internet Explorer

Restore Accessibility Options to Default Settings

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,

I have now posted the log as shown in my reply to Siljaline. Sorry, the
URL
seems to have gone from the clipboard and I am unable to post the link
again.

I reformatted using the Windows XP Home SP2 CD.

My anti virus program is NOD32. They tell me that the hidden paratition
could not be infected. It is not possible to scan it.

I tried unchecking the "Enable 3rd party browser extensions" but it
didn't
seem to make any difference.

The problem is with the search window. No errror reports apear but the
window does not work properly in either IE nor Opera although it does
in
Firefox. The words which are normally above the window such as Newsds
and
shopping obscure the window after a search has been made.

Thanks for your help.
