Frustrated

How do I turn these things off? I don't want any
automatic searches. I use AOL, and when I am browsing,
these windows pop up and freeze up my computer for a
minute....drives me crazy!

You are experiencing what is called spyware/adware. It's not really a virus
but close. You just need to download 1) Spybot Search and Destroy and 2)
AdAware. Both are free. One always seems to find something the other one
didn't so run both.

Try :

1. Adaware - www.lavasoftusa.com
2. Spybot S&D - www.security.kolla.de

Remove all the spyware, hijackers using the two tools. They should be
able to take care of them.

To deal with pop-ups caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Xupiter, Bonzai Buddy, or
KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately (but without
understanding the consequences) installed, two products that are
quite effective (at finding and removing this type of scumware) are
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search & Destroy from
http://security.kolla.de/. Both have free versions. It's even
possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your system
against most future intrusions. I use both and generally perform
manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.
