I have just built my own website and would like to submit my website to
various search engines, such as Google and Yahoo. Can you please tell me how
to define the text that the search result shows?

Thanks

You can try using a special HTML tag called a meta tag. There's a specific
meta tag for descriptions. Some good information is at:
http://www.highrankings.com/metadescription.htm and this site has an example
of the code: http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=2167931

The main problem though, you don't control how the information is going to
be displayed on the search engines. No matter what you put in there, they do
what they want. Some of them will honor your meta description, others may
decide they don't like the text for some reason and will put the first text
they discover, or text that contains part of the search phrase the search
engine user is trying to search for.

The search results normally show the meta description tag text.

Right-click and select 'Page Properties', then enter the description for the
page you want to use.

Although some people use the same description on every page (a general
description for the site) it's better to have a separate description for
every page, which improves the way the SE's pick up multiple pages on the
site.

The other thing worth doing is to create an account on Google Webmaster
Tools, https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/about.html and using
the various tools they offer.
