I accidentally installed Internet Explorer 7. It was junk. I uninstalled it
and thankfully 6 restored. Unfortunately the search pane "left" will search
but items cannot be selected with the little hand (it's inactive). I cannot
run a repair or reinstall, microsoft doesn't like it and the program doesn't
show up anywhere?

Hi,
Try disabling browser add-ons- IE> Tools> Manage add-ons. An add-on may need
to uninstalled/reinstalled.

Go here:

for ie-rereg.zip. ie-rereg may be able to fix this.

Is this machine free of malware (adware, spyware, hijacker, trojan, etc?)
