I did not change anything in Vista settings yet. I'm trying to learn some
simple tasks. One of them Search. I open Windows Explorer, I open drive C:
in the right pane, I type the first characters of the file name expecting
that the file will appear in the list. Although I'm sure that the file is
there, it's not hidden, it's not system etc. , it doesn't appear in the
list.
What settings should I change in order to get the Search working?

i think maybe your file index isn't including your C:/ drive...?
maybe try updating your index by doing this..

->control panel
->indexing options
->modify button
->show all locations
->check the c: (and/or d:) drives
->click ok

it might take a little bit for your drives to be re-indexed but i think this
will allow your Search to access more files..
don't forget you can Tag files as well, using keywords or certain characters
to find your file faster in the Search.

let me know how this works out for you..

I did what you suggested. By default all drives did not have a check mark.
But even after that the search doesn't work. If I go to Advanced, check the
check box then it works. It's annoying to use Advanced every time

But you're finding your files faster and easier now right??
don't forget about the Tagging option too!
very handy for important files!
