Search not working - system freezes

When I click on Search from the Start menu the system freezes for about 30 seconds and then nothing happens. Search works fine when I invoke it from the Explorer. Also, Search works as advertised when I boot in safe mode. I suspect that there might be some registry entries that have been corrupted by a virus/spyware infection. The system is now virus free. One other symptom, which may be related, Hotmail freezes when I attempt to attach a local file. I would hate to have to reinstall everything but it may be my only option

If anyone has been down this path or has suggestions, it would be appreciated. Thanks --Rocky

Rocky, any luck. I've got what sounds like exactly the
same problem!
