This message comes up when I try to modify the data in a memo field in several records. It won't let me leave the record unless I use esc to undo all my changes
Compacting and repairing has no effect.

Thanks very much for the tip. It seemed to be exactly what was needed. It said that it was because there was a limit of about 3450 characters in the field and that this was exceeded. To solve it said:
If you must enter a large amount of text in the Memo field, delete the index for the Memo field. To do so follow these steps:
Open the table with the Memo field in Design view.
On the View Menu, click Indexes.
Click the index for the Memo field, and then delete it.

Unfortunately, you must then, of course, save the table, but when doing so, it informs that the index field must have a name. So why Microsoft shows this as a solution seems ridiculous.

Is it possible that you were deleting the *name of the index* rather
than the index itself? Right-click on the index and select Delete Rows.

Yes thanks very much. That was what I was doing. I was afraid that deleting the row would delete the field, but did a test, and found that this wasn't so, and went ahead with the problem field and this enabled me to further enter or modify data.
This is the first problem successfully solved for me here. Thanks again!

I was having a heckuva time deleting a phantom record that was placed in our main data table when the server apparently hiccuped while being written to. Kept getting THE MESSAGE. You guys provided the solution... thank you very much!
