Search is broken?

Just did a search for all files containing a word in a
specific folder. I was told there were no results. I
then found the file, and even copied the word from the
file and pasted it into the search, but it still didn't
find it. Is there yet some NEW implementation of a switch
I missed? I used search extensively in 98, resisted
buying a new computer with XP, and have had one
confirmation after the next in my upgrading.

Yes, search in XP is broken, er I mean doesn't work the way it did in
Windows 98. In order for XP to search within a file for text the file type
(extension) must be properly registered.

My preferred solution is to use a different search tool. My favorite is
the free version of File Locator Pro, called Agent Ransack and available
for download at http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/default.aspx.

A non-MS solution! Sounds good. I am SO over the
downgrade-upgrades I keep dealing with using MS-OS.
Every version, something is moved, changed, removed....
.... and they call this making it easier? Not for me,
thats for sure.

Thanks.

properly registered? So program association is no longer
properly registered? Looks like I don't know how to do
that anymore. Looked in all the usual places, and help.

See Doug Knox's reply for a link to a solution to get the extensions registered to allow the "search for text in files" function to work.
