We are searching on "803529" (without the quotation
marks) The search from several of our Windows 2000
machines returns a lot of documents, but we know another
Excel file is in the subdirectory, and should come up in
the search results, but does not. We cut and pasted this
from the document itself, and put it in the search
criterion, and still this document does not come up. It
is read-only, but so are a lot of the Excel files that
correctly come up in the search.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Parts of Excel files are not stored in plain continuous text
Formatting information is also saved in the file
Send the Excel file in question to a text editor, such as Notepad
Use Notepad's Find feature on the Edit menu to search for 803529
You may find that your string cannot be found
It might be saved in the file as
8 0 3 5 2
80 352
803 52
etc
There could even be other special characters between the numbers

Try this with other Excel files too
Notice a pattern
