Hi,
Having difficulty learning how to use search in Vista!!
In xp;in search you could just type in the file ext(i.e. .dll;.exe) and it
would find all files of that type.
Can't figure out search in Vista.
Any help?
P.S. Jimmy B; any good kb's or do you have a simple way????

Jeff

I just typed .dll into the search box, clicked the little arrow on the
right side, picked "Search the Index" and it found 13965 items, everything
from
C:\Windows\winsxs\FileMaps\$$_system32_migwiz_dllmanifests_microsoft-windows-international-core-dl_94a6465211a68ccbtoC:\Program Files (x86)\Viewpoint\Viewpoint MediaPlayer\NewComponents\ZoomView.dllso I would say that it's doing a good job. Thanks to Alan Simpson for pointing me in this direction, this new search isgreat.Ray"Jeff" <[email protected]> wrote in messageHi,> Having difficulty learning how to use search in Vista!!> In xp;in search you could just type in the file ext(i.e. .dll;.exe) andit would find all files of that type. Ray,
May be missing something here;but which search box?
I went to start; search; typed in .dll in the top right box with the
magnifying glass on the right, no little arrow, only the magnifying glass.
Then saw the advanced search arrow;clicked it;typed in .dll-Search
results-no matches????
Jeff

You're right, the period seems to be confusing it.

Try specifying *.dll

Also, make sure you tell it to search system directories.

Click Organize on the toolbar, then Folder and Search Options. Click the
Search tab. Click Include system directories and include archived files (if
you want).

Also, from the search screen it just searches the index (your documents and
such in your user profile) by default, unlike all local hard drives in xp.
You will need to change the location to the area you are wanting to search.

Jimmy,
This is confusing me.
That didn't work either, I did what you said-still search returned no
matches?????

Jeff

Oh yeah, make sure you're typing *.dll in the search box at the very top
right, and not the file name box (I know, I know ... this will be much
easier in the next build, according to MS)

Jeff, underneath the top-right search box in Search, there is another box
preceded by the word 'in', with a dropdown. Select one of the options from
there, ie All Drives and Devices, or Users Files, or Index. That will tell
Search where to search ;) Works a treat :o)

Jimmy,
Thanks for all your help;but; no luck; typed *.dll- search results-NADA;
and changed everything like you said.
Hmm, maybe I found a bug?????? LOL :-)
Jeff

Ummmm,
Ok, still no dice!!

Hmm looks like there's a bug in this build where even though you have search
thru system folders selected, the thing does not honor your request.

Is the location you have selected a hard drive root? If so, try narrowing
your search to a specific folder.

Man, lots of bugs found today!

Ok,
My luck;
No options to add places to the index. Won't even see the drives;so i
rebuilt the index--no dice
looks like my specific build-dload is bad for indexing

Jeff

Maybe you have not got any .dlls on your drive? Obviously the only
conclusion now according to your efforts is they don't exist.

Better tell MSFT, that will confuse them even more, may even put the
release date back another few months and I will win several bets.

Hi,
When I try to add the c drive to indexing;it's not available.
The only things listed are Office Outlook, Offline Files,Start menu, and
users.
When i use the modify button; the only locations listed are the one's I just
mentioned, there are no other options available; i.e. it doesnt see c drive
Jeff

Yes;
But those are the only things listed in that window also, no drives at
all.
That window has a header of -Change selected locations;with a box that can
be chkmarked on the left;thn an arrow to the righr;thn
the locations. Identical to the bottom window-Summary of selected locations.
In the top;no tree at all no c drive;nothing except; the locations I listed
Jeff

Well now, that's a strange'n.
I have Desktop listed, with a (one of those triangles that we all hate) to
the left of it. When I open that drop down listing I see the whole shebang,
C: drive and all.

The user interface for the search index has changed in every build.
Apparently the team can't make up its mind as to how to present it all to
the user. I didn't see a build number as a looked through this thread. But
maybe I just missed it.

Also, it's all still a little rough around the edges. The index searches
seem to be working fine in most builds. But searching outside the index is a
little weird and unpredictable. Ironic, since that sort of thing is simple
compared to indexing. I suspect that it's just a user interface issue.
