Is there a wild card character? As an example: looking for "ala" anywhere in
the contact name, etc. That is any character(s) before the letters 'ala'. I
tried * and ?. No good. Thank you for your help.

You provided no information that would permit any help.
State Outlook version.
State search method.

Outlook 2003
Search Method:
1) open global address book
2) select the Find Items icon
3) type in the characters I'm looking for in a field it could be in. For
example, type "ala" in the Last Name field.

Aha. The GAL. Nice to know. May not even be an Outlook question.
Try using Advanced Find or ask you Exchange Administrator.
