When I click on Search nothing happens. Also the System Restore will not
advance beyond the first function block. I think the problems are related.
Any suggestions for a cure.

Hello Earl,

Go to Start => Run and type in - or copy/paste - each of the commands
listed below, one at a time. Hit Enter after each. Note that there is
a single space after regsvr32.

regsvr32 wshom.ocx
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Thanks Claymore. Still no success after following your instructions. I do
think these commands relate since my script writing ability in the browser on
my desktop has failed when I attempted to communicate on this forum. I am
using my laptop to communicate. My desktop backup harddrive indicated some
changes regarding regsvr32. Any added help is appreciated. Earl

Yes, Earl, it sounds like they may be related.
Try this:
Go to Start => Run and type in "sfc /scannow" {without thed quotes,
and with a space before /scannow}
You will be asked for your Windows installation CD. This routine will
replace any wonky system files.

You could also try reinstalling the Search Assistant:

Go to Start => Run and type in:
%systemroot%\inf {No spaces}
Click OK.
Locate the file Srchasst.inf
Right-click the file, and click on Install. You will be asked to
insert your Windows XP installation CD in the drive.

This will reinstall the Search Assistant.

I proceeded with directions given. Did not always get results as explained.
No search ability so I shut down computer for the day. Today I reactivated
computer and the system retsore function worked. It even had one added
command of undoing previous restore point. I restored several weeks back.
It worked and I had the search function back but in that process I lost the
restore ability again. I think I will proceed with your first set of
commands again to see if system restore function comes back again and then I
would pick an earlier restore date to see if the restore function can be
corrected. Do you have any thoughts regarding this. Thanks, Earl

I repeated the Start -Run-sfc /scannow program and I have both Search Function and System Restore back online. I will use current point for future restores. Thanks for your help. It is appreciated. Earl

I performed the Start-Run-sfc /scannow program. Both Search and System
Restore are back. I will use today as future restore point and hope that all
systems are good. Thanks for your help. It is appreciated. Earl
