How to define the Search function for a definitive answer?

I tried "XXXX" but quotation marks do not work.

What is the notation that W2K recognizes to define Search?

Start a Search for the desired criteria, then File|Save Search

Maybe I wasn't clear in my question, I don't understand your answer.

If I put in a item to search, I get everything.

How to be specific in entering a search term?
 
Yes, you weren't clear. What are you searching? My response was a guess at
what you were asking.

For an example, I put in a file name, what I get back is as if I put in
*.txt.

Sometimes, the file has two terms, like Registry Cleaner, if I put in
"Registry Cleaner" to eliminate the many registry or cleaner entries, I get
no result.
 
Doesn't happen that way for me.

dir with four test files
my test.txt
sometest.txt
sometest.zzz
test.txt
--------------------

????test returns with
sometest.txt
sometest.zzz
--------------------

*.test returns with
my test.txt
sometest.txt
sometest.zzz
test.txt
--------------------

my test returns with
my test.txt
--------------------

???test returns with
my test.txt
--------------------

????.* returns with
test.txt

Typo; should have been

I believe simply putting in test will return all those files (i.e. any
occurrence of test anywhere in the filename) won't it?

Perhaps that's what the op is referring to - he gets too many hits. If
so, your examples should indicate how to limit the search.
 
Remains to be seen.

Here are my results, created your files, used your search parameter:

I had 32 returns

I had 190 returns

my test returns with
my test.txt
I had 991 returns

???test returns with
my test.txt
I had 52 objects

????.* returns with
test.txt
I had 4627 returns


AFAIK I have a standard W2k/SP4 install, I don't mess with settings
except very necessary ones.

I did exactly what you did, very different results.

Why the difference and how to fix it?

OK, let's back up. If you wanted all files with "Registry" OR "Cleaner" in
the search then

Registry Cleaner

If you wanted all files with "Registry Cleaner" somewhere in the name then

"*Registry Cleaner*"

If you wanted all files with one leading char AND "Registry Cleaner"
somewhere in the name then

"?Registry Cleaner*"

Does that help?

don't work too well. We have somewhat different files on our hard drives,
I 'm sure, but with 128 entries, I had everything including the kitchen
sink.

Your results were entirely predictable ... just like David has been saying.
Your search returned *EXACTLY* correct results according to your search
criteria.

So this is the only way to limit the search to *just* my item?
 
1.) I got that much and I posted some examples.

You had mentioned "*XXXXXX*", that did isolate whatever I want to find.
You mentioned several other ways for broader searches that I may use in
the future.

But to search for a one-word term, or a two-word term, is there any other
way to limit the returns to just my item?

I hope the above is clear?
 
No problem. For one word anywhere in the name it is easy ...... you just
enter in the word. For a two-word string separated by one space; anywhere in
the name it is also fairly easy.

"*word1 word2*"
