search for files or folders does nothing

I know this sounds dumb, I always took the search feature
to be simple, but,

startmenu ->search ->for files and folders, I enter *.avi
into search window or any other query and click "search
now"... Nothing happens.

Can someone please tell me what might be going on here?
 
I think I have the same issue. I can do a wildcard search
like that, and in the results list I get the message:
"Search is complete. There are no results to display."

The problem is, if I navigate the tree myself, I can find
files that meet the search criteria. I've verified
that "Search Subfolders" is selected, and have tried
with "Search slow files" both turned on and off.

I couldn't find a known issue in the knowledge base...
 
I know this doesn't answer your question - but I've been
having the same problem for several months now. To this
point it's been a minor annoyance - but it's becoming more
aggrivating.

Have you heard any possible solutions yet?
