Using XP Pro.

Search for files & folders not working. It opens an
explorer pane however the search criteria frame is blank,
buttons although not greyed out do not function. Menues
do not have full set of options - File only has 'exit'
option ( they are not greyed out they do not appear)

Help says change search chriteria - fine but the option to
do so does not exist!

How do I reset and which files have been overwritten?

Thanks

Hi Nigel,

Try this: Click Start | Run and type:
"regsvr32 /i C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll"

If this did not help,
1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator
permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This
reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.

NOTE: If you are prompted for the location of msgr3en.dll and your computer
came with Windows XP preinstalled, it is likely to be at C:\Windows\i386.
Type C:\Windows\i386 into the Copy Files From dialog and press OK.

Method 2:
Download a fix from:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://www.microsoft.co
m%2fDownloads%2fRelease.asp%3fReleaseID%3d39318

Thanks for the reply but problem remains. The Machine has
SP1 loaded

Method 1 - I have a disk of SP1 but it is an exe file. if
I instal the srchasst.inf file it asks for srchui.dll
which I can provide from the original Windows disk - This
loads but then wants to load the compressed *.dl_ file
from the SP1 disk. I only have SP1 as a self extracting
exe file - is there a utility to extract a specific *.dl_

Method 2 fails because the fix is designed to work on a
machine which does not have SP1 loaded.

Nigel

Mention the path as C:\Windows\Servicepackfiles or
C:\Windows\Servicepackfiles\i386

Have been able to install scrchasst.inf - completed
sucessfully however problem still remains

If you have already registered the srchui.dll ("regsvr32 /i
C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll"):

Disable any anti-virus program, any BIOS anti-virus, and any 3rd party
system tool that monitors files.
Run SFC /SCANNOW.
If the Search is not fixed, perform a repair installation of Windows XP.
