I wanted to find the Outlook .pst files on my C drive.
I set the advanced options..
.. Search for *.pst (also tried .pst)
.. Location: Local Disk (C:)
.. Include non-indexed, hidden & system files.
In the first 1 second the search returns 7 .pst files from the Recycle bin
of my M drive!!! WHY??
Then the search goes on & on & on for hours.. after a further 2 hours it
still had not found any more. I let it run all afternoon. When I came back
several hours later it had found a few more files with "pst" in the title AND
it eventually found my wanted Outlook .pst file. When I did the same search
on my XP PC it found my .pst file in a few seconds. Please could someone
explain what's going on. Why is it so much harder to get a result in Vista.
All the search options are all over the screen instead of in one area, and
many of the straightforward choices are not there any more.

Hello,

try re-building the Search index by going to
Control Panel -> type Search in the search box -> click Indexing Options ->
Advanced... -> Rebuild.
This should bring your files up-to-date.

Hope this helps.

Thanks P.
I rebuilt the search index as you described. I re-ran the search, it stiil
brought up the 7 .pst files in the M: recycle bin. It has been running 20
minutes and found nothing else so far. It hasn't changed it at all.

So nobody (not even a MVP) can tell me why it takes 3 seconds in XP to find
my Outlook .pst file, but Vista takes nearly 3 hours. !!!! ??? I have a
screen dump of the results but I don't know where to post it. Please can
someone try this search and see if they get the same slow result.

I tried it last night, it took 2 seconds to find the first one, and about 2
minutes to find 3 more... all on the C: drive. I used Ext:.pst in the
search box.
