I am running Windows XP Home SP1. I have a 56k dial-up modem. Whenever I
go to the Search feature and select files on this computer. As soon as I
hit search, the search companion wants to go on line. I only want to search
my computer and see no need to go on line.

How can I disable this feature. I have been reading the newsgroups and
Microsoft's knowledge base but nothing as worked yet.

If someone knows how to fix this problem, please let me know. Thanks in
advance.

Oh, I have also run Adware 6.0 and Norton's antivirus program. There were
no viruses found and the spyware was removed, but still no luck.

From Kelly's site:

"Search - Internet Access Needed (Disable the Action)
Search Assistant will try to connect to http://sa.windows.com This is done
to check for updates to its features, tips, wording and etc. Not allowing
access can cause its own set of problems, usually a "A file that is
required........." error message.

You can stop the internet access by changing the search behavior to Classic
Search.

Disable Search Assistant (Line 15)

Old Style Search Engine On/Off (Line 49)

Or...

Use TweakUI, Explorer section to set Classic Search:

Or you can make the change manually.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Cabinet
State

Right click in the right pane and select New, String value and name the
value Use Search Asst. Double click the new value and enter "no", without
the quotes.
