My little brother loves to install popup programs. Now I
am having a REAL problem. He had installed some tool bar
that lets you search several websites. I uninstalled the
program but now I can't use any search engines. If I go to
yahoo and search for something it comes back with "pages
can not be found" if I go to MSN and search, same thing.
Altavista will not even load neither will google. I cannot
find any search engines that will load on the computer.
Has any one has this problem

thanks,
jason stepp

Hi Jason,
Your system might be affected by the recent Qhosts Trojan.

This Trojan Horse that will modify the TCP/IP settings to point to a
different DNS server. Blocks many search engines.

Trojan.Qhosts Removal Tool
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.qhosts.remova
l.tool.html

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/trojan.qhosts.html

==
Open the HOSTS file and delete all mappings except:
127.0.0.1 localhost

The file is located at
"C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" (named "HOSTS")

Backup the current HOSTS file first.

==
Reset TCP/IP.

Click Start | Run | Cmd
type "netsh int ip reset changes.txt"

==
Run WinsockXPFix.exe.

==
To prevent this from happening:

Install hotfix 828750 which fixes the vulnerability:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/828750/default.asp
