Search does not work?

I have a computer with XP home on it and the search
function in explorer does not work?
When I select the search tab in explorer, I get the
proper screen and menu. I select files and folder and
put in a file name I want to search for and the computer
does nothing. When I press the CTRL-ALT-DEL key I see
that the program is not responding.
How do I fix this......
