Windows xp media centre edition
On boot up after having installed the latest updates from Windows Update:
I have a new item on my task bar
a text box which has entered by default
"Search Desktop" with a magbnifying glass icon to the right of it.

?Why has it just arrived?
?why should I need it?
?How can I get rid of it?

Don't know; You probably downloaded this application when updating your os.
?why should I need it?

You don't.
?How can I get rid of it?

In 'Add or Remove Programs' panel, scroll down to 'Windows Search 4.0'
click/highlight then click the 'Remove' button.

?Why has it just arrived?
It arrived, because it was offered by Microsoft Update. Microsoft
created this enhanced search facility, which indexes file content and
(supposedly), offers additional functionality. It sits on top of the
old search facility, which is still available if required. However, it
is an optional item - NOT a critical update.

?why should I need it?
If you were happy with the previous search facility, then you don't.
Furthermore, it has been blamed for causing problems with Outlook
Express, because unless you customize the program to exclude indexing of
EML, NWS & DBX files, you will receive regular prompts to compact your
Outlook Express folders.

?How can I get rid of it?
Open Control Panel and click on "Add or Remove" Programs. Scroll down
and select "Windows Search 4.0". Click on "Remove".

On a separate topic, you should always disguise your email address in
public newsgroups. It is not advisable to reveal your real address,
because you are likely to receive unacceptable volumes of junk mail.

Bob,
Thanks for your prompt and lucid response to my posting.

Your advice about not reveling my email address:-
I use Outlook Express.
Tools > Accounts > News > Properties
The dialogue has a text box for email address
It will not accept a blank entry
Are you suggesting that I should enter something like
(e-mail address removed)

In one word, Yes.

For further ideas, do a Google search against "email address newsgroups"
