I used to be able to do a search within a folder window by clicking
the search Icon. The Search Companion that came up first would ask me;
"What do I want to search for: and give me a choice of Pictures....,
all files and folders, etc.

Now when I click on the search Icon I get an section of the window
that opens up that looks completely different and says : "Search the
Web" "Find a Web Page Containing:"

How do I get back to my old search companion? I can't find anything in
the preferences that would allow for this

Thanks

This was probably the standard module in WinXP

1. We do not know which search icon you mean or where
you click on it (e.g. on Desktop or via / Start button. It may help
to know this.

2. This looks like the "Google Search Toolbar" piggybacked onto
your web browser. Use / Control Panel / Add/Remove to
uninstal this. If it is not listed there, check your browser's
/ Tools / Options. If you uninstal OK you may need to reboot
before the repair takes effect.

3. If unsuccessful, ensure the Windows Help services have
been turned on via / Control Panel / Admin. Tools / Services.

Thanks Don,

1) The search Icon I was referring to was the magnifying glass that
appears in one of the toolbars in a Windows Explorer (not I.E.)
folder window. The Magnifying Glass icon that is part of the start
menu works properly and gives me the search options I have been used
to. It is only when I try to access the search function through a
folder window.

2)I do have Google Search Toolbars on both I.E and Firefox however
there is no listing for it in Add-Remove.

3) during one of the windows updates I did download and install the
windows desktop search tool. Even when that was installed, there was a
period of time where my Folder Search Companion functioned normally. I
have recently uninstalled this WIndows tool however the Search
Companion that shows up now (as I referenced before) does have a 2008
Microsoft copyright at the bottom.

I hope this helps

Thanks again

Mike

Don,

Thanks for your help:

1) The search Icon I was referring to is the magnifying glass Icon
that appears in one of the toolbars in a Windows explorer (not I.E)
folder window.
The magnifing glass Icon that appears in the start menu works just
fine and opens the
search companion that I am used to.

2)I do have Google Search Toolbars installed in both my browsers (IE &
Firefox) but there is no
Google toolbar listed in my "Add/Remove Programs". Google Search
Toolbar is not listed as an
add on in IE but it is in firefox.

3) I did install Windows desktop search but have since uninstalled it.
It seemed to have still provided the correct
search companion even when it was installed if I remember correctly.
The Search companion that shows up now has a white background and
aside from saying "search the web" and "Brought to you by" it has a
Microsoft 20008 copyright
