Search Companion in XP Bug

Search companion opens but the tick boxes and text boxes
are missing. Therefore can't use search companion.

There's a patch on the Microsoft knowledge base that I
think may address this but.. if you have updated your
service pack the patch (Q319949) won't run.

Any suggestions? I'd be very grateful.
