I have lost abilility to search due to a missing file. I have been having a
difficult time with spyware and an extra file may have been deleted. How can
I go about restoring the function without a windows re-install?

Any help much appreciated.

Pat

Hi Pat,

Try reinstalling the Search Companion files and see if that resolves the
problem.......

Go to Start>Run and key in:
%systemroot%\inf
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Locate the Srchasst.inf file, right-click on this file and then select
Install.
Have the install CD ready to insert if prompted to do so.

Regards,

Patti,
Thank you for the lead. The trail to reactivate the search companion was
successful. Thank you for your input.

Best regards,

Pat

sorry this is not about the thread but i couldnt find how to make a new one,
so i'd like to know if i have a processor 64bit amd 3000+, is windows xp
32bit viable , I mean is it gonna use my 64bits on processor or simply gonna
use 32bits over the processor thx in advance

Patti,

I have the same problem as Pat. When I went to reinstall the missing file
(following your directions), I was prompted to insert the Service Pack 2
disc. My problem is that I downloaded the SP2 pack (I don't have a disc) and
I can't find the SP2 pack file on my computer. I wasn't sure where to browse
for it. (If I browse, do I still have to insert a disc?) It would have
downloaded the the default site, but I do not know where that is. I really
don't want to reinstall windows.

Thank you for your help.

You can browse for the files at:

c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386

Or create a Windows XP CD with Service Pack 2 integrated/slipstream.

Here is a program that can help you integrate Service Pack 2.

nLite

nLite Guide

Integrate/Slipstream Service Pack 2 manually using the directions from the
following site:

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

I tried what you suggested to reinstall the search companion and followed all
the steps but still the problem persists. Kindly help.
