Ok... here is the saga...... Compaq Evo N800C, my wife insisits on keeping he favorites open in IE... well this is the second time that she has corrupted the search companion as outlined in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 319949. The problem being one of the outlined fixes will work.......... the only thing that I have been able to get to fix the companion is a repair install. The problem here is that the Compaq image disks are only for a reformate and I cannot repair from them that I can figure out?? So i must repair from a regular XP pro CD.. this breaks some of the other features in the compaq install like the wi-fi modules and USB 2.0 no longer works in 2.0 mode....

Thus the question... has anyone else had this problem and do they have a solution???

The KB article you cited gives you two (2) methods to fix
your problem, the first one being to install SP 1, the
second one being to install a patch (hotfix). Neither
resolution involves a repair install of Windows XP or a
reformat. Have you installed the Service Pack 1; or have
you installed the hotfix? The KB article states that
doing one or the other should prevent the problem from
persisting.
Good luck!
