Yesterday, I did Windows Update, primarily to get the newest MSIE
security patch. One of the other updates offered was Search 4.0. After
reading its description, I decided to install it.
Big mistake.
First, there was no warning anywhere that it needs to be done by
itself. As soon as that part downloaded and installed, the rest of the
Update process ground to a halt and I got two application crashes,
first was Windows Explorer and then the Error Reporting Tool itself,
which basically froze my entire computer. The update progress bar
indicated that 9 of the selected items had been downloaded. I had to
force-kill with the hardware power button. On rebooting and after I
returned to Windows Update, the only change to what was offered was the
Search 4.0 download was no longer offered.
I re-selected the updates I wanted and proceeded. The downloaded and
installed, and I rebooted the machine.
Then I set about learning the new search tool. It seems nice, until I
realized that my system performance was hosed, even though the Search
tool said that indexing was on hold due to user and/or disk activity,
and the system performance was slowly, but steadily, degrading further.
So I installed the new Search tool and on rebooting, my system was back
to normal.
This is on an XP Pro SP3 system, hardware consists of an AMD
Athlon64-X2 4200+ 2.2Ghtz, 3G of PC3200 RAM, ASUS A8N-E mainboard, and
a Seagate Barracuda series SATA drive.
Any clues as to what's wrong?
