Seagate ST980815A hardrive detection problems. Help.

Hi I am having problems with a new external hardrive that I have purchased.
It doesn't get detected by Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 Service Pack
2. I have tried to download new drivers but with no luck.

Can anyone Help???

If it's a case of the device being detected but no drive letter assigned...
then you need to use disk management...

If the device is not detected at all...then it's defective or your USB port
is defective
(or possibly a bad cable)
 
It works on my laptop but I have a different XP platform. Maybe I need to
download a driver but I do not know where to look.
 
A new HD needs to be formatted in order for Explorer to see it.
This is done under Control Panel/Administrative Tools/computer
management/disc management

All versions of XP have full USB support...
even if a driver is needed, the machine should have at least detected a
device...
so the USB port on your machine must be bad
 
The hard drive is not getting detected at all. I have tried 4 different USB
ports around my computer and nothing. The hard drive has alredy been
formatted. XP is just not able to detect it and install it. The USB ports
cannnot be bad as other hardware seems to work fine.
 
I plugged the hardrive into a USB port at the back of the computer and now
the hardrive is working. Maybe one port on my computer is assigned with the
correct software or driver. Thanks alot for everybodys help.
