I "ghost" my 10GB Maxtor HD to the 80GB Seagate HD.
The original Maxtor HD has the XP os and was Primary
Master. I then removed the Maxtor HD from the IDE
connection, replaced it with the Seagate HD at Primary
Master.
I restarted the computer and everything is identical to
last I had the Maxtor HD except for the error:
Under Device Manager --> Disk drives I see ST380011A with
an error:
The drivers for this device are not installed (Code28)

I tried to "Reinstall Driver" but could not.

Besides going to run XP setup again, is there any other
thing I can do?

First, did you set the jumper on the new drive to master? Most come that
way from the factory, but it is always good to check.

Assuming that you have master/slave correct, the next thing to check is the
cable itself. Older hard drives used 40-pin cables. Newer ones (ATA/100 or
133) need 80 pin cables. Under Win98 you might have gotten away with a
40-pin cable and ATA/100. XP is much more demanding of its hardware meeting
certain requirements. Note that the new drive might have come with a new
cable. If so, try it.

Finally, some new hardware requires a "repair" installation of XP. This
differs from a full or upgrade installation in that user files and programs
and settings are NOT erased. However, all XP updates will be lost and will
have to be downloaded and reinstalled. It is a bit unusual for a hard drive
to need this, be keep this in mind as a last ditch fix. Links to how to do
a repair:

Thanks.

Yes the master/slave is correct and so is the cable.

I resorted to a repair installation on the Seagate drive.
After that there is no more error. But I have to reinstall
many drivers for my other devices, many end up not working
and require reinstallation. I gave up, reformatted the
Seagate HD and 'Ghost' it back from my Maxtor.

I was wondering whether I need to do something special
during the 'Ghosting'. Must I set anything in the Norton
Ghost?

I 'Ghost' the HDs from a Norton Ghost floppy startup.
